LIGHTING TERMS
- DIMMER
- Equipment that actually undertakes the dimming of the lanterns and
is controlled remotely. Often called a Rack.
- DESK
- PRESET
- A set of channel faders controlled by a master
- CUE
- A predetermined setting for a group of channels
- CONTROL CABLES
- Cable to connect control desk to dimmer racks
- SPIDERS
- Multicore connector with legs to suitable connectors to link various items to a common cable.
- PROTOCOL
- System used to control digital lights
- ROBOTS
- Digitally controlled multifunction lanterns also called scanners
- DISCHARGE LAMPS
- Arc lamps up to five times brighter than incandescent lamps
NB. these lamps can not be dimmed electronically
- DMX
- Digital control system with up to 512 channels per cable
- DMUX
- Digital to analogue converor Usually 48 channel
- BARNDOORS
- Four hinged flaps rotatable to control beam from lanterns, not suitable for profile spots.
- SHUTTERS
- Movable blades to control the beam of a profile spot
- GOBO'S
- Pierced patterns fitted into profile spots to project images
- TO FOCUS
- To set the lanterns direction beam spread, beam shaping and with profile spots the sharpness of the beam edge
- TO PLOT
- To make notes of channel levels used for each cue
- THE PLOT
- Notes for the entire show also called the cuelist
- LIMES
- FLOATS
- Area across the front of the stage or equipment used there
- GRID
- The area above the stage on which equipment is hung
- BARREL
- 48mm tubing also known as 'scaff' or bar when flown
- GROUNDROW
- LX run of floodlights across stage
- UV
- Ultraviolet light usually blue also known as blacklight will cause sensitive paints to fluoresce
